What The 21-Day Sugar Detox Program Did For Me

I did it. I am happy to report that I have completed the 21 Day Sugar Detox Program!

The big question now is….

How do I feel?

I’m going to be real with you. I feel amazing. Yup, amazing—from my body, to my mind, to my soul.

I know you’re probably thinking— “Cmon now Nicole, aren’t you being a little dramatic?” or “21 days of no sugar is all it takes to feel amazing?”

I get where you’re coming from, but there is no drama here. How I feel is just the result of real food nourishment and being on the right track to finding what makes me feel my best self at all times.

Before I get into the results of my experience, I want to talk about where I was prior to starting 21DSD. Up until 2017 I ate a typical standard American diet full of fast food and easy pre made boxed foods. I wanted to make a big change in my diet for health benefits like more energy and better digestion.  This desire led me to experiment with a Ketogenic diet. When life got a little hectic—of course—I quickly reverted back to my old habits of fast food. My last bout of Keto ended once the holiday season began in November. I celebrated Thanksgiving & Christmas on multiple occasions with numerous family, friends, and coworkers. I took full advantage of sweets, processed foods, and mixed drinks. I had a great time and made great memories.

The downside is, I felt terrible during the week. I had a lack of energy and unstable moods. My skin was rough and blemishes were appearing at the worst times. My cravings were off the charts. Every time I wanted to make a healthy choice, there was a craving I needed to satisfy with a visit to my favorite restaurants for one last cheeseburger or an all you can eat sushi dinner. I’m sure you can imagine that after eating such meals I was left with no drive to prepare anything healthy for the week. It felt like a never ending cycle.

In order to end the cycle, I needed something I could commit to. I had first heard about The 21-Day Sugar Detox Program while listening to Diane Sanfilippo’s podcast called Balanced Bites. I had shrugged off the program for a while until the end of December when I realized I wanted a fresh start. 21DSD sounded like the perfect way to do that.

Changes After Completing 21DSD

I have broken free from Hangry Nicole! Yes, we all have a hangry version of ourselves when our blood sugar levels are unregulated. We get moody and go into search and destroy mode. Now, I can actually make healthy food choices with a clear mind and a nourished soul.

The program has a strong focus on filling your plate with nutrient dense foods rather than calorie counting. I found this to make the program enjoyable and effective. I was able to eat until satisfaction while giving my body various vitamins and minerals. Removing inflammatory foods like sugar, alcohol, gluten, vegetable oils, etc. gave my body a chance to heal which resulted in me seeing improvements in the following areas:

  • Steady energy throughout the day
  • Falling asleep easier & staying asleep
  • Less hunger throughout the day
  • Increased hours between meals: 4-6 hours
  • Less bloating
  • Little to no stomach aches
  • Smoother and plumper looking skin
  • Less hormonal acne
  • Improvements in PMS symptoms

Life after 21DSD

A friend of mine had asked me this past weekend— “So, are you never going to have sugar or dairy again?” Now, this is the million dollar question, isn’t it? And my answer is:

Of course I will, within reason and with full awareness of how my body will react.

I plan to follow the program’s post detox recommendations and slowly reintroduce foods like fruits, natural sweeteners, goat cheese, and dairy—one group at a time—paying close attention to any changes in energy, mood levels, skin, and digestion.

I feel empowered with the knowledge and tools learned from the program to be able to craft a diet that is personalized just for me.
