Today I am excited to share that I have started a three-week program called The 21-Day Sugar Detox, and I have successfully completed Week 1! Wooo!
Now let me rewind and raise the question: have you heard of The 21-Day Sugar Detox (21DSD)?
If you haven’t heard of this amazing program, I will gladly shed some light on it for you!
So what is this 21-Day Sugar Detox all about?
The 21-Day Sugar Detox is a program created to bust through sugar and carb cravings using whole foods only. No weird shakes or juices necessary— just real food. This program was created by Diane Sanfilippo, a Certified Nutrition Consultant and a big influencer in the Paleo Community. In January 2018, Diane released her second book for the program titled, “The 21-Day Sugar Detox Daily Guide”.
I’m sure you have seen a ton of diet-related programs on the market today. Many of them give you meal plans and send you on your way. With the 21DSD Daily Guide, not only are you given a meal plan for the entire 21 days, grocery shopping lists, and 75 recipes—but you can check in daily to see what to expect at this point of your 21DSD journey and a daily nutrition or mindset lesson. There is even space to journal how you are feeling each day of the program in the book.
The program rules are pretty simple:
- Find what level you are: Level 1, 2, or 3.
- Eat any foods off the yes list: variety of veggies, nuts, butter, meats, seafood, just to name a few
- Avoid foods off the no list: artificial/natural sweetners, alcohol, just to name a few
- Eat to satisfaction, do not under eat
Did I mention there is no emphasis on calories? Whatsoever! The goal is to focus on nourishing yourself with real food not restricting calories.
What is my why?
So, I’m sure this program is starting to sound awesome—but I want to make sure I share with you “my why”.
Why commit and challenge myself to a 21-day sugar detox?
Like many people, I took full advantage of the holiday festivities and treats last year. The hardest part of transitioning to healthy eating is always the cravings. So this program is the perfect fit.
The 21DSD program also supports my focus on my skin and digestive issues. I have always had a suspicion that dairy could be the cause, but have yet to remove dairy from my diet for more than 4-6 days. I chose to complete the program at Level 3, which omits dairy. I wanted to finally commit to no dairy in my diet and see if I feel better during these 21 days.
Week 1’s Lunch
Week 1, What I ate & How I’m Feeling So Far:
Breakfast: Sausage, Spinach, & Peppers Frittata (Recipe in 21DSD Daily Guide)
Lunch: Chicken Fajita Salad (Couple times during the week I took a smaller amount of the salad and ate it in coconut wraps. Yummy!)
Dinner: Ground Beef Stuffed Sweet Potato with Brocolli
So far I have been feeling great aside from a headache on Day 4. Although a headache is never fun, I felt comforted while using the daily guide. Diane explains on Day 3 & 4’s “What to expect” section that headaches are common during this time possibly due to the shift in blood sugar. The guide also helped me realize that I am more active at work than I thought, which required me to increase my intake of whole food carbs. Once I adjusted that, I was back to feeling great.
Heading into Week 2, I plan to get creative with my meals and monitor my water intake to stay hydrated since the work day usually gets the best of me. Check in with me next week for my Week 2 update!
