May 22 I don’t even know what a normal hormone state is for me
At the beginning of the year I wrote a post about my Top 3 Health Goals for 2018. I have been reflecting on my progress since the beginning of the year. To be honest even though I have been eating healthy 80% of the time, I have not always been doing so with mindful intentions. I find myself just getting by and getting lost in the routine of days that past. As a result, I am still plagued with large cysts that leave unsightly marks, foggy brain, fatigue, lack of focus, mood swings, and feeling a sense of: “Something is just not right.”
Thankfully, I received a gentle yet strong push from a podcast that I love and listen to regularly, The Balanced Bites Podcast. On one of the most recent episode titled “Female Hormones & Recovering from Birth Control“, they had a third time return of the amazing Dr. Jolene Brighten. When I saw her name in the episode title I knew I was in for a treat and I was not disappointed!
This episode is full of amazing information about post-birth control syndrome, testing your hormones, best practices when you are taking birth control and empowering women to seek/question information so that they can make informed decisions around birth control and health in general. I highly recommend this episode for any woman at any stage in their life, period! (pun intended).
Normal hormone state, what’s that?
What really sparked my need to make balancing my hormones a priority again was something that Dr. Brighten said about patients who have been on the pill for an extended amount of time:
“It’s a really unique time in history where we’ve seen women suppressing their hormones for decades. I’ve had women come in who are like; I got my period, it was awful, so the next cycle my doctor put me on the pill. Here I am 30-something years later, I don’t even know who I am in my body. I don’t even know what’s a normal hormone state for me.”
I felt like Dr. Brighten was speaking directly to me! This really struck a chord with me. After 11 years of taking birth control and suppressing my natural cycle, I really don’t know what a normal hormone state is for me. I don’t know what that feels like.
Where do we go from here?
When I’m feeling lost, I have to start fresh to get an understanding of what I’m dealing with. So I decided to go back to the basics to understand what it is that we, as women, go through every month. We’re taught in school about men and women’s reproductive systems, but we’re not taught that a woman’s cycle has an ebb and flow that can be disrupted by many factors such as toxins in our environment, food, beauty products, birth control, stress, nutrient deficiencies, and more.
So! All of this is to say:
I’m putting my hormones first.
I’m going to share with you what I’m doing to feel empowered and balanced in this body in hopes of inspiring you. I’ll be tackling all the factors that can disrupt the balance, starting with the menstrual cycle.
In the meantime, seriously go listen to this podcast episode on your commute home, while your doing laundry, getting ready to go out, or anytime at all! Again, this episode is good for any women. Whether you’re of reproductive age, going through menopause, trying to get pregnant, on birth control, or just got off birth control you will receive value from it.
